Now is probably a good time to introduce you to my obsession with Lilly Pulitzer. Let’s just get that out of the way…!
In 2002 I had no idea who Lilly Pulitzer was. But turns out one of my good friends did. That’s because one of my best friends since the second grade named Jenny Mac, was in fashion school at Moore in Philly, and had landed a highly sought after summer internship at the Lilly Pulitzer headquarters near where we lived. After working there for awhile, the sunny vibe of the office apparently started to rub off on her and she decided to paint her bedroom walls, all of them – including her ceiling, bright vibrant colors. Then she did the bathroom too. She hand-painted wavy, flowing floral designs on the freshly painted walls, and the colors…were just so bright. I was inspired. So that’s how I was educated on the happy, colorful signature hand-printed style of this iconic fashion designer and I was soon hooked.
Note: This isn’t Jen’s room, she has since painted over her amazing Lilly-ish walls but the memories burn bright. To give you an idea though, this is what a dressing room looks like inside a Lilly Pulitzer store, (they are all different and unique too – no small detail is spared), you just kinda never want to come out….and yes I’ll take ALL the clothes please!!
But a Lilly label doesn’t come cheap. In fact, I wouldn’t be able to afford nearly anything (with the exception of a few accessories) until a good decade later. Now, I am slowly building a solid Lilly collection…I have a few pairs of shorts, 2 shirts, 1 dress, a pair of flip flops, a skirt, picture frame, a couple bags, luggage tags, and an agenda to write in….oh and a girlfriend got me a jewelry case, and I have a keychain and a necklace, lol.
Best friends buy you Lilly!! 🙂
LP just makes me happy is what I’m trying to say. One look at these colors and the fun, cheerful patterns and my vibe is instantly elevated ❤ ❤ ❤
I also really love me a good brand and I feel that Lilly just gets it right. The other day they had a crazy 24-hr After Party Sale (they hardly EVER have sales) and I went on to check out what they had around 10am and got this message…
Does that give you some perspective on how many dedicated Lilly lovers are out there?! Holy crap! Needless to say I waited and scored some amazing deals. They also have an annual warehouse sale up in PA, which I hear is absolutely insane and people camp out to wait for it.
About a year ago Lilly did a line for Target and their inventory sold out at nearly every store within days. You can also receive ‘free presents’ when you spend a certain amount, (what woman doesn’t love that?!) and even their packaging is eye candy. I’m not talking about just the gorgeous bags either, even the tags on the clothes are a real visual treat. I feel like Lilly did for fashion what Steve Jobs did to personal computers, and what Walt Disney did to theme parks. It’s all about the detail. There’s also some real finesse in their marketing and branding strategy that hits it out of the park.
Fellow Lilly lover, friend Debbie checking out the freshly painted dressing rooms in the new Disney Springs store. Notice she’s wearing her Lilly too!? We can’t get enough!
But beyond all of this brightly colored fanfare and genius marketing is the queen of the jungle herself….Lillian Pulitzer Rousseau. Though she’s been deceased for a couple of years now, her legacy lives on through her beloved fashion brand, and her story is one that’s too good to pass up. Also, I have both of her recipe and entertaining books if you’d like to borrow.. 😛
Hope you enjoyed that little bit of Lilly love ❤
